...consistent high quality...

Capital Compost owns and operates a 50 ton per day composting facility incorporating two Wright composting tunnels in Albany, New York.

Capital Compost is a subsidiary of Energy Answers Inc., which operates energy-from-waste facilities. As organic waste typically has high moisture levels, Energy Answers prefers to divert these materials to composting to improve the operation and efficiency of their burn plants.

The Capital Compost facility is located on the same site as an Energy Answers Inc. transfer facility. Incoming loads high in organic materials are directed to the organic waste receiving area of the composting facility. Incoming loads of mixed waste are directed to the receiving area for the Energy Answers Inc. transfer facility.

Loads high in organic materials are received from produce markets, grocery stores, food processing plants and paper processors. These materials are conveyed into a mixer and, after thorough blending, are conveyed to two Wright composting tunnels.

Each of the Wright composting tunnels is designed to accommodate 25 tons per day of food wastes amended with papers and wood with fourteen days retention within the tunnel.

Each tunnel is comprised of nine sections: a loading section, three common sections, a spinner section with rotating paddles to thoroughly blend the composting materials in-situ, three more common sections and a discharge section with a series of breaker bars and an auger to remove materials from the tunnel onto a discharge conveyor. A series of perforated stainless steel trays form the floor of each composting tunnel, providing flexibility in the number of trays loaded per day and allowing regular inspection of trays as they exit the tunnel during the loading procedure.

The biofilter is located in a below grade excavation adjacent to the composting tunnels.

Capital Compost has successfully marketed all compost produced at their facility to commercial growers and local residents.
