...proven to be cost effective...

Building upon the highly successful and cost effective Wright in-vessel composting initiative at Auburn Correctional in New York State, Riverview Correctional Facility was selected as the second correctional facility to be the recipient of this technology.

Located on the banks of St. Lawrence River near Ogdensburg, and established in 1988, this institution initially processed all of its organic waste through grinders and pulpers, directed into sanitary sewer and the local municipal sewage treatment facility.

It was determined that increasing demand was effecting the treatment plant's ability to process and return fluids to a level required by the Department of Environmental Protection. Regular inspection and analysis of discharge into the St. Lawrence River determined that the municipal waste treatment plant must either incorporate a significant capital expenditure to increase capacity, or to decrease infeed from one of it's largest contributors, Riverview Correctional Facility. Working together for a solution it was determined that the correctional facility would explore other options of waste management.

Early in the 2001 Wright Environmental Management was awarded a contract to supply in-vessel composting technology to process approximately 4,000 pounds per day of waste organics from the institution. Operational in August 2001 food waste was diverted through the composter vessel and away from sanitary sewer. This had the immediate effect of reducing or eliminating B.O.D. surtaxes to the institution, dramatically reducing loading on the sewage treatment facility and converting what had been a waste product into a rich added valued product, called compost. Compost is now treated as a resource within the institution and is used in the gardens and greenhouse programs, which are operated by the inmate population.
