...we got what we wanted at the price we could afford...

The Virginia Department of Corrections is committed to the reduction of food waste generated per inmate, to reduce current costs of disposal and to reduce negative environmental impacts of current methods of disposal.

Achieving reduced costs of disposal and reducing the environmental impact of disposal, meant evaluating technologies that provided a more environmentally friendly and yet cost effective approach. Efforts to locate such a technology began in earnest during the summer of 1998.

After extensive due diligence, Wright Environmental Management's in-vessel composting technology was selected as the best means to achieve these goals.

Operational in August of 2000, at the Powhatan Correctional Center, Wright in-vessel composting technology represents a first within Virginia Corrections and the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

4,000 pounds of organics are processed daily. The composter is operated by the inmates, and compost generated is used on gardens and farming properties surrounding the Powhatan Correctional complex.

So successful has this initiative become that a new Environmental Services unit, under the direction of Mr. W. T. Davis has been established within the Department of Corrections to ensure the continued expansion of this positive waste reduction initiative.
